Teach What You Know

We want to help the local church to engage our communities in new ways to break that cycle by helping children and youth to stay engaged in school and complete their education all the way through college or vocational programs. We know that one of the ways that we support transformation in the lives of our youth and families is to respond to the educational needs of our families.

We estimate that only about half of the parents in our communities have graduated high school. This creates educational problems for generations as teenagers drop out of high school and repeat the cycle of their parents.

We also are committed to partner with the Church to provide educational support for our parents.

We want to empower our parents to return to school, to complete their GED’s, Associates or Bachelor’s degrees. We know that when parents raise their level of education, it not only improves their employability and raises the standard of living for their family, but it also raises the standard of education in a family for generations to come.

Opportunities for Teachable Moments:

Tutor Team (8-10 hours per month):

These volunteers assist youth by offering academic tutoring and guidance. Volunteers will work with Community Coordinators and youth to set up any needed tutoring sessions. Volunteers may also be asked to contact a student’s teacher in order to customize an academic growth plan.

College & Career Prep Team (8-10 hours per month):

These volunteers work with high school juniors and seniors to help them prepare for life after high school. Volunteers will assist teens in every step of the college application and preparation process, as well as help them set career goals.
